Coincidentally, my mom and I had planned a trip to Paris that took place several days after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo. Mom had some trouble with her flights, so I ended up alone on the day of the big manif. The town felt really vibrant, there were people with signs everywhere and the buses and metro were packed. I didn’t go to the manif myself partially because I promised Mom I wouldn’t and partially because I think it would have been a lot of people for me. But we did buy copies of the latest Charlie and I noticed a lot of solidarity imagery around town, plus tons of Je Suis Charlie.

My mom and I had a great time hitting the soldes (after-holiday sales).
The first night I was there, I took a walk setting out from our adorable hotel around the Jardin. The sunset was amazing and the weather was so pleasant. I even ran into a herd of shetland ponies (?!).

After a lightning-fast week, I was on my way home, via Reykjavik.
In early July we went to Costa Rica with my mom and stayed at Finca Bellavista. Parker took some great pictures. Here are a few of my favorites:
To get to Finca Bellavista, we took a little plane from San Jose to Golfito.
We stayed in this really cool treehouse. Mom was very keen on being “in the canopy” and chose a treehouse accordingly.
To get there, we hiked twenty minutes down this path:
The first day, we went ziplining.
The beautiful river on Finca’s property was great for swimming.
Base camp at the Finca was lush and lovely. There was an incredible suspension bridge:
One day, we took a day trip to Isla de Caño, eight miles off shore. It was a rough ride out and a cold and rainy ride back. Memorable!
Another day, we went sea kayaking in Golfito and got back to shore just in time to see this storm come in.
On the last day, we went to Playa Uvita, a beach with an amazing natural whale’s tail formation off it.
It was a beautiful and creepy-crawly trip (snakes and spiders, oh my!) It was so relaxing, but we were all happy to head back to the land of dry clothes and air conditioning. Ah, technology!
Made it to High Park today on one of my last days in town.
With Jenny, of course.
This past weekend, I headed out to Los Angeles to celebrate my friend Sloane’s bachelorette party. It was a riot: four girls cried, five girls puked, and we lived the luxe life for three days. So fun. To me, one of the highlights was going to the super-trendy Bungalow at the Fairmont Hotel. We were lucky and got there before it filled up, so I was able to snap some pictures of the inspirational decor without the crowds. I love the beach-y, but not tacky, vibe.
We snagged a table outside.
It was a wild and fun weekend :)
It’s a Surly Cross Check that I ride around town and, once, for 270 miles. Parker has slowly but surly (typo and keeping it) made it into my dream bike :)
Do you like your bike? Link to it in the comments! xo. H
